Browser Support and Text Modifications
The PetrOman website has been designed to work with a variety of browsers on different platforms; it endeavours to support the most popular browser versions in current use. Often, web pages can be difficult to view because the text is too small to comfortably read. Below is a list of supported web browsers together with instructions on how to increase the size of the text on any web page that you are viewing.
PetrOman Accessibility Control Chart – this chart opens in a new window.
Mobile Devices
The PetrOman website is “responsive” in design so that it is compatible with various mobile phones and tablets:
• iPad (1 and above)
• iPhone (3GS and above)
• Android phones with similar capabilities
Magnifying Your Screen
If increasing the text size via the browser or Windows options do not make text easy to read, another solution is to magnify your screen. All recent versions of Windows include magnification software, which can make it easier to read text on the screen.
The Windows magnifier lets you increase text to a very large size. It is, however, restricted to a small portion of the screen so most visually impaired people find that they require fully-functional magnification software.
For users with the Mac OS 8 or 9 operating system the magnifier CloseView is available. Users running OS X will need to use the inbuilt zoom feature.
Images and ALT Text
All images on our website have an alt text associated with the picture which can be read aloud by screen readers or Braille displays. The alt text serves the same purpose as the image itself and still conveys the same essential information.
Links
Links are written so that they are clear, concise, and unique on each page. This makes the links easier to scan visually as well as if you are using a screen reader.
Page Out
On every PetrOman webpage there is a navigation which creates a path as you view each page on your journey through the site.
This left navigation pane, along with the bread crumb at the top of the page, allows you to return to an area you may previously have navigated from, or instead, use it to continue on your journey to find more detailed information.
The body window and blackboard footer of the page are where you will find the real content of the PetrOman site. Some of this will change and update as you navigate across and around the site.
You will also find the search fields within right hand sidebar of the window the footer, from which a site wide search in order to find required information can be instigated.
Videos
Videos on our website are provided mainly in YouTube or Vimeo so as to ensure that the video experience is optimised for different user devices and bandwidth. Videos hosted by PetrOman are compatible with popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox which use a standard built in HTML5 player. Older browsers such as earlier versions of Internet Explorer rely on plug-ins such as Flash to play videos.
Flash
In order to view Flash content, a flash player plug-in version 10 or above is required. If Flash is not installed on your machine you may be prompted to download the plug-in. Alternatively you can download the flash plug-in from the official Adobe site.
Alternative images or HTML versions are provided for those who wish to view content in a non-Flash format.
Downloads
PetrOman uses .pdf files to help us preserve the look and feel of original documents. To open and view .pdf files, download the latest version of PDF Reader. .pdf files can be converted to either HTML or Text by using the Access Adobe online PDF conversion tool.
The Royal National Institute for the Blind also publishes information on accessing a PDF using screen readers.
To open and view ZIP files, download the latest version from WinZip. This extraction software allows zip files to be uncompressed so that contents can be viewed.
